James R. Smart founded the real estate firm of Smart & Golee, Inc. in 1885.  Smart was the mayor of Evanston from 1913 to 1915 and President of Evanston Bank and Trust from 1914 to 1917.  Smart & Golee, Inc. was acquired by Heil & Heil, Inc. in 1972, forming the present day firm of Heil, Heil, Smart and Golee.

Heil & Heil Insurance Agency, Inc. was established by George Heil, a graduate of Yale University.  Since 1972 it has been a subsidiary of Heil, Heil, Smart & Golee, and a full-service insurance agency, offering markets for commercial lines, life & health, annuities and group benefits.  Dickens & Co., an aviation insurance agency is also a subsidiary.

Our founder, James M. Flanagan, was born in Chicago and lived here all his life.  He graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in June, 1959.  After graduation, he began his career in the real estate field and a few years later purchased Heil, Heil, Smart & Golee, Inc.

Heil, Heil, Smart and Golee is a leader in Residential Property Management,  Commercial Real Estate Services and receivership services providing management as well as development and leasing.  Ownership has taken pride in being able to offer many services for aspects of the business of real estate, from management to insurance.  Heil, Heil, Smart & Golee is a holding company that operates a property management and development business and owns several insurance and real estate subsidiaries.
